Inspired by the idiom ‘Yang lama dikelek, Yang baharu didukung’ (Malay for the old is carried, the new is embraced), Ku Kelek, Ku Dukung by NUS Ilsa Tari challenges the dichotomy of ‘tradition’ and ‘modernity’ by exploring the complex interplay between these concepts.
This interdisciplinary production simultaneously honors the past and engages the present, inviting audiences to look beyond binary perspectives and embrace a more balanced worldview. Ku Kelek, Ku Dukung features a unique blend of movement, live music, and spoken Malay poetry, performed in collaboration with local poetry group Kelana Pantun Temasek. In addition, a student-led music ensemble under the direction of composer Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin reinterprets traditional Malay music with unconventional instruments.
